Pros
1) Flexibility - As long as you bill the minimum number of hours required at the law firm, it really doesn't matter where you work all of the time. Some attorneys in my group work remotely or at home certain days of the week.
2) Pro bono opportunities. My firm allow you to bill unlimited pro bono work. For instance, I am working on a guardianship petition which counts toward my minimum hours requirement.
3) Resources. The firm promotes the advancement of women, with seminars, newsletters, and events.
4) Interesting Subject matter. I practice employment law, which involves a human element that everyone can relate to, relationships between employers and employees. I have a lot of interaction with employees, managers, human resources professionals, etc.
Cons
1) Long Hours- Although there exists flexibility in the place of work sometimes, there are certain set minimum billable hours. And it does require a lot of work.
2) Weekend work -This is a given.
3) Pressure to make partner. At some law firms, if you don't make partner, you're out. Partnership track varies from 5-10+ years. At most firms, there is also pressure to rainmake, or bring in business.
4. Unpredictable hours. Litigation is very deadline driven and sometimes unpredictable and demanding.
