Pros

Routine – you know what to expect every month

Usually stable hours (9-5) except during month end

Provides a bigger picture view to the general health of the company than other positions in the company may have

Being in the adversarial position can also be good because it can build a stronger character

Cons

Every month end, it is hard to take vacation or take time off because it is usually busy then.

Routine – same thing every month

Can sometimes be seen as an adversarial position because you will sometimes be asked to cut expenses, say “no” to certain desired expenses, headcount, etc.

Executive Assistant

Job Description

I get in at 8am everyday and leave at 5pm everyday (unless I'm traveling or scheduled to attend functions). I am on the phone for most of the day and I am also the liaison for my boss and the rest of the company. Everything he needs communicated gets communicated through me. I am constantly talking and dealing and phone tagging with various people from all different areas within the company. My day always begins and ends with a wrap-up meeting with my boss.

Pros

I love and respect my boss. I know this is key is most jobs, but I find it especially important in mind just because I'm such an integral part of making sure his day runs smoothly. If I didn't genuinely like the guy, I wouldn't want to help him. I also love the perks. Because I'm assisting a pretty important person, I get to travel a lot and go to really interesting functions. Most recently I got to go to Vegas for a convention. It just gives me great opportunities to meet new people, see new sites, and eat good food. Did I mention the benefits at the company are excellent?

Cons

Sometimes I feel as if I'm looked down on. Let's get it straight, people! I am NOT a secretary. Sure, some of my duties include secretarial work, but what job doesn't? And I am NOT a coffee-fetcher. I hate that misconception. And sometimes I can tell people look down on me or talk to me like I'm stupid because of this. Also, things can get very demanding. I don't have a lot of margin for error. A mistake can cause a huge domino effect of problems. Simply put, if I miscommunicate one little word, that might mean a whole department may misunderstand and make the wrong business decisions.

Financial Analyst

Job Description

I worked as a liaison between cross-functional dept's and that gave me the ability to meet a lot of people in the company. It allowed to me to get out of the duldrems of only being in finance. Finance people can be bit anal (due to them being so analytical) so be prepared. The more you know about Microsoft Excel, the better off you will be. So get to know the more complex functions such as: VLOOKUP, Macros, Pivot Tables, etc.

Pros

1) Stability - Overall, a finance career is a stable job. There are usually an abundance of jobs and there is always a need.

2) Routine - For people that don't like a lot of change with their job, finance could be a career for you. There is change but you can always count on month-end close, quarter-end close, and year-end close.

3) Insider Info - You have access to certain information that other employees aren't privy to. You can also see how the overall company is doing and in what direction they are heading based on their financials.

Cons

1) Routine - Month-end, Quarter-end, and Year-end close seem like they happen everyday. Time sneaks up on you very quickly and it sometimes feel like my only job is to prepare for this times.

2) Insider Info - It's great to know this info but sometimes it can work against you. Especially when you have to deal with headcount. When you do a headcount analysis and have to cut some of your employees, they may be your friends and that could be uncomfortable.

3) Analysis - I did soooo many spreadsheets I got sick of them.

4) Perks - There are no perks when you work in finance. Finance is overhead and it's a thankless job. If you want perks, I've learned to go work in Sales, Marketing, or Engineering.

Finance Consultant

Job Description

Again, there's not a real routine to this job--except that I come in early and try to leave before dinnertime. I don't really know what will come up in my day. So my only routine is coming into work in the morning, booting up my computer, and then leaving in the evening.

Pros

What I love most is the work environment. I can honestly say--without a single breath of hesitation--that I love and respect my coworkers and superiors. They not only are always willing to help and give everything they do 110%, but they are a great support system for me.

My bosses have done nothing but to encourage me and help foster my growth. They make sure I'm challenged everyday and learning something new everyday.

Besides all these factors, just working for such a big company is advantageous in itself. There are so many opportunities if you ever wanted to explore other arenas.

Finally, we have great benefits and programs. This place really knows how to cater to the employees. I feel like a person rather than another number in the employee database.

Cons

My job is not mundane, but not necessarily in a good way. It can get so overwhelmingly crazy at times. (The good thing about this is that I've become a masterful multitasker.) There's so much to manage and so much going on that it can be stressful.

My days are unpredictable which makes prioritizing tasks a little difficult. What you plan on getting done one day may not get done until the next week. This is why I tend to start working on projects AS SOON AS I know my deadline. It makes no difference whether the deadline is 1 day away or 1 month away. I need to always keep in mind that meetings will pop up, people will call, I will be sent out of the office for other business, etc.

The other con is that since I work with a lot of people in different time zones, even if I get in the office at 7am, I will have so many messages waiting for me. There is no advantage to being on PST. None.

Marketing Director

|

Job Description

I do sales and marketing for a financial services company. I am almost always on the phone or out at meetings trying to identify financial representatives that are interested in our product and incorporating us into their business mix. Once identified, I aim to get the representative properly educated and then have them begin presenting our product to their clients.

Pros

Great company, great management team, great product. This position is relationship building and management. It is a great way to refine your people skills, developing business relationships, providing education and solutions and also give top notch customer service. This is a fluid position with constant growth. I have a lot of autonomy to run my territory as I would like, of course along with my team members. I rarely work overtime. I travel enough but not too much.

Cons

Really, there are no cons, in my opinion.
